Teen Dating Tips for Parents

One of the most difficult stages for parents is when they realize that their teen is now starting to date. Teen dating is normal but parents have to ensure that they are going out with someone that will not put them in dangerous situations. That is where the contradicting opinions come in. On one hand you need to ensure that your teen will be happy with someone you go out but on the other hand, something inside you wants to protect your teen and might even prevent your teen to go out. This is especially true when your teen is a girl.

Ensuring Safety

The number one concern of the parents on teen dating is safety. Teen dating violence is always a possibility if you do not observe safety precautions for your kids. Of course, you don't want to ruin your teen's date by following them wherever they go, you just want to make sure that they will be in a safe place.

The following are the tips to ensure safety for your teen when they go out on a date:

Ensure that the mobile phone has a full battery and working - this is not actually for you to call them whenever you need it, this is actually for them so that they can call you in case something wrong has happened.
Know the itinerary - as already indicated, you don't need to be literally there just to make sure they are safe. You just have to know where they are going so that you will know where to find them in case something bad has happened.
Meet the date - never in anyway, pass on the opportunity of meeting your teen's date. This is very important when your teen is the girl. You need to make sure that she goes out with someone that you can trust. Personally meeting her date is a little bit awkward but they will understand that you are only doing this for safety. Notice the age discrepancy, clothing, the way he speaks and actuation. You have to ensure that she is going out with someone that will not harm her.
Date's phone number - if your daughter's date is confident of protecting your daughter, he will never hesitate to give you his phone number. This number, though, should only be used during emergency situations or anything out of the ordinary such as coming home late.

Trusting Your Teens

Parents should never show any paranoia or unnecessary level of concern when their teens are going out on a date. It is very important for parents to trust their teens. They are already old enough to make decisions and as a parent, your role is to guide them and help them with their decisions. You are only breeding rebellion if you prevent your teens to make a decision for themselves. Listen to his or her opinion and tell her what you think of her opinion in a non-combative manner. Talking will really help your teens which will improve your relationship.
